What Is Our Active Ingredient (BZK) And How Does Dab Kill Germs?

Benzalkonium chloride (BZK), the active ingredient in DAB and 1 of 3 FDA allowed “hand rub” active ingredients, is a well-established quaternary ammonium compound known to be effective in killing germs.

“The cationic “headgroup” of BZK is progressively adsorbed to the negatively charged phosphate heads of phospholipids in the lipid bilayer, and as a result, increase in concentration.

The consistent increase of BZK concentration results in reduced fluidity of the membrane and thus the creation of hydrophilic gaps in the membrane.

In addition, the alkyl chain “tail” component of BZK further perturbs and disrupts the membrane bilayer by permeating the barrier and disrupting its physical and biochemical properties.

Protein function is subsequently disturbed and the combination of the aforementioned effects results in the solubilization of the bilayer constituents into BZK/phospholipid micelles. BZK also interrupts intercellular targets and compromises the conformational behavior of DNA.”

SO, WHAT MAKES DAB “ UNIQUE ” AMONG HAND SANITIZERS?

Our formula uses a proprietary technique that reduces the surface tension of the liquid DAB, something not found in other hand sanitizers. By reducing surface tension DAB does not “bead” like water does on surfaces but spreads out immediately.

Since germs hide in the cracks and crevices of the skin and the normal skin oils make it difficult for high surface tension liquids to cover completely those cracks and crevices, DAB is able to get its BZK to “find” more germs. And when it finds them, it kills them.

BZK is known to have hours of persistence

Alcohol sanitizers have no persistence on the skin and BZK is known to have hours of persistence. Due to this skin covering and binding to more surface area of the skin, including those hard to get to cracks and crevices, DAB provides hours of glove-like protection of the hands.
